Landscape and nature The landscape is very divers and green the whole year through. The mountainous north is the most beautiful part of the island where you can have a magnificent view over the island from the 906m mountain Pantokrator. The southern part is lower and more tourist orientated. In between you will find sloping hills that are used mainly for agriculture and sometimes for cattle breeding. No other Greek island has so many cypresses and olive trees. All over the island you will find olive orchards with its eye-catching knotty trees full of fanciful wholes. The production of olive oil according to traditional methods is still a major source of income in the small villages. Sometimes you can witness a whole family busy with the harvest and the pressing of oil. The island has many different sorts of citrus trees of which the Kumquat is very famous. In Europe you can only find this little Chinese orange at Corfu and Sicili. A local orange and sweet liqueur is made out of these little fruits. Corfu is also known as the flower island. The fertile soil and ideal climate enables the island four seasons of blossom with an overwhelming diversity of wild flowers. As much as 36 different sorts of orchids blossom and flourish on the island! Between the green vegetation a variety of (protective) species feel at home. You can have an encounter with a turtle or see the birds of prey fly in the sky. At the former saltpans under Corfu-city you can even witness the white heron and other special birds.
